    AB: Abstract
The feasibility of composting pulp and paper mill fly ash with wastewater treatment sludge was investigated and the suitability of the product as a soil conditioner was examined. Power boiler fly ash from a pulp and paper mill and primary and secondary sludges from the mill wastewaster treatment plant were mixed and composted in two windrow piles, one static and the other turned and mixed. The physical and chemical characteristics of the raw materials were determined and changes in these characteristics were monitored. The finished compost was applied to land on a local sod farm; changes in soil characteristics were monitored and dioxin concentrations in the soil and compost mixture were determined. Leaching of heavy metals from the compost was also considered.
